Jinko ESS helps Athens International Airport build the world’s largest airport self-consumption integrated PV-storage project.

Athens International Airport recently announced the successful completion of its “Route 2025” energy transition roadmap. As a benchmark project for the green transformation of global aviation hubs, Jinko ESS supplied a 123.8 MWh utility-scale liquid-cooled energy storage system for the project, helping the airport establish a stable and efficient clean energy system.

The project combines photovoltaic generation with energy storage solutions to create the world’s largest self-consumption integrated solar-plus-storage project in an airport setting. By using the energy storage system to regulate and optimise the use of renewable energy, the airport is steadily moving towards its goals of 100% energy self-sufficiency and net-zero emissions, and is expected to achieve its industry decarbonisation targets 25 years ahead of schedule.

Against the backdrop of the global aviation industry’s accelerating low-carbon transition, this project not only demonstrates the application potential of integrated PV-storage solutions in large-scale transport infrastructure, but also provides an important reference for energy transition in high-safety-grade scenarios such as airports.

Roberto Murgioni, General Manager of Jinko ESS Europe, stated that this project marks a new phase in the development of airport energy systems and will drive the pioneering transition of global transport hubs towards the net-zero era. On 12 December 2025, Lawrie Wilson, Head of Sales for Jinko ESS Europe, and Dimitris Varlamis, Head of Sales for Jinko Solar South-Eastern Europe, attended the project opening ceremony, jointly witnessing this milestone moment.
